What Neurodiversity Coaching is not

It is important to emphasise that neurodiversity coaching should not be confused with therapy or medical treatment. Neurodiversity coaching is a service that aims to support neurodiverse individuals in navigating their strengths, challenges and goals through a neurodiversity-affirming lens. Understanding how coaching differs from therapy is crucial, as they serve different purposes and use different approaches.

Coaching focuses on personal development, empowerment and goal setting

Coaching focuses on working with clients to identify their strengths, aspirations and challenges, and helping them to develop strategies to achieve their desired outcomes. It is not about giving advice or telling clients what to do with their lives. The coaching relationship is built on the premise that clients are resourceful and capable of making meaningful change.

Specifically, the methods I use are mainly based on Systemic Coaching and Learning Coaching. Lerncoaching focuses on helping clients to better understand how they learn and process information, and to develop strategies that work in harmony with this. Systemic Coaching focuses on how an individual sits within a social environment and how their strengths, challenges and goals relate to that environment.

Therapy focuses on mental health, diagnosis and treatment.

Therapy focuses on mental health issues, diagnosis and treatment. Therapists are trained professionals who specialise in treating mental health problems. Therapy often focuses on understanding and managing emotions, resolving past trauma and improving wellbeing. Therapists use evidence-based techniques and interventions to help clients achieve improved emotional and psychological functioning.

Medical treatment includes diagnosis, medication and clinical interventions.

Medical treatment involves the diagnosis, medication and clinical interventions associated with specific health conditions. Medical professionals, such as physicians and psychiatrists, are responsible for assessing symptoms, diagnosing neurodivergent conditions, prescribing medications, and providing medical interventions. Medical treatment typically addresses the physiological aspects of neurodivergent conditions and may take a more symptom-focused approach.

Neurodiversity coaching complements therapeutic and medical approaches

It is important to understand that neurodiversity coaching can complement, but should not replace, therapeutic and medical approaches. Coaching can provide additional support, guidance and practical strategies to complement mental health treatment or medical interventions. Neurodiversity coaching recognises that neurodivergent individuals have unique strengths and perspectives that can be used to promote personal growth and success.
